At Definitive Electrical Solutions, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional electrical services across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the wider East Midlands area. One of our key services is the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), sometimes referred to as a Fixed Wire Test. This inspection and report is vital for ensuring the safety and compliance of electrical installations in various premises, including Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire businesses. Today, we want to share a recent case study from a restaurant in Nottingham to illustrate the importance of EICRs and how they benefit businesses.

What is an EICR?

An EICR is a thorough inspection of the electrical installations within a property or premises. It assesses the condition of the electrics, identifying any damage, deterioration, defects, or non-compliances with current safety regulations that might present a risk. For businesses, regular EICRs are not just about compliance but ensuring the safety of employees and customers, minimising downtime, and preventing costly emergency repairs.

Case Study: The Restaurant

Recently, we conducted an EICR for a popular city-centre restaurant in Nottingham. The restaurant's management team approached us due to the fact that their insurers  required them to get an up-to-date EICR certificate for their premises – these are needed every 5 years.

Our qualified NICEIC-approved electricians began with a detailed visual inspection of the restaurant’s electrical systems, examining the wiring, distribution board, sockets, and lighting fixtures. The restaurant was housed in an older building, as are many in Nottingham, so there were a few areas of concern that required further testing.

As a result of our inspection, we discovered several issues including outdated wiring, loose socket connections and insufficient earthing in some areas. These were detailed in our EICR along with recommendations to improve the electrical installation and bring it up to current regulatory standards. As we always do when our EICRs show that the electrical installation is unsatisfactory, we also provided a quote for the remedial work required to bring the electrics up to standard.

The restaurant management agreed to our recommendations, and we promptly carried out the necessary remedial work. This not only ensured the restaurant's compliance with the latest regulations but also significantly improved the safety of the premises for employees and customers alike.
