Arkwright Town was owned by British Coal at the time and emission from the colliery cased the evacuation of many of the houses in the village. It was decided that the best course of action was to build a new village on the opposite side of the A362.

The work was completed in 1995 and the old Arkwright town was demolished as the residents moved into their new homes. As part of the agreement to rebuild Arkwright Town, British Coal opened a 100-acre open cast mine nearby, this closed in 2005.
