Local Electrician

Local Electrician

Finding a local electrician can either be seen as a really easy task or really difficult and daunting, with the thought of finding a trustworthy electrician feeling like a bit of a minefield.

Despite efforts to simplify this process many people do not realise where the best places to look are. Whilst there is no shortage of directories of local companies and vans and adverts that you see around how do you truly know who to approach?

A great way to begin your search for your local electrician is to ask friends and family who have may have had electrical work carried out recently. Maybe you notice some new light fittings or a new summerhouse in their garden with full electrics - don’t be afraid to ask who the electrician was. People love to recommend others and often you will find your local electrician will come highly recommended by others with a lot of repeat business due to the high-quality works.

A recommendation is a great place to start however for peace of mind its always important to check that the electrician can be found on the competent persons list for electricians. Whilst many people mean well and wouldn’t willingly recommend an unregistered person its always best to check this independently. This will give you peace of mind that your local electrician is fully registered which can save you from problems later on.

If you struggle to find word of mouth recommendations the competent persons register is a useful tool, allowing you to check for registered electricians in your local area. It's a completely unbiased, government scheme and will give you a good starting point for your research.

Once you are aware of all the local electricians in your area you can then sort the “great” from the “good” by checking the details against other online services.

The Trustmark register is another excellent tool to check – whilst not a requirement for a registered electrician it does show that the electrician has demonstrated more than just the minimum criteria to qualify to carry out domestic electrical work. To join Trustmark an electrician has to verify their membership to an electrical body and undergo an independent assessment of their work. Your local Trustmark electrician will also provide a warranty on the electrical installation covered by a guarantee in the event that anything was to go wrong.

A large majority of businesses are now online with either a website, Facebook page or a specific review facility such as google or check a trade.
These tools are again useful when looking for a local electrician as customers leave a review of the work carried out. With lots of advertisement for checkatrade its one of the more popular places for customers to leave feedback on work carried out. It is however important to note that reviews should never be relied upon on their own, although they can give you a feel for the electrician and will help you decide if you want to make further contact.

Whilst the above steps may seem a little long winded, it's always worth taking time to find the right local electrician for you. Doing a bit of “Homework” pays in the long run and leaves you safe in the knowledge you have fully researched the subject and found the right local electrician for you. It may be tempting to just ring around the electricians that are listed in the local advert booklet you should always complete background checks for your own safety and knowledge that you have warranty covering the work completed.
