Electrical Safety

Electrical Safety

If you are like many people, dubious about where to find a qualified and registered electrician to work in your home, you will be pleased to know that a new search facility was officially launched by the Government which lists all fully qualified and registered electricians who work in England and Wales.

Reducing shoddy and dangerous electrical work

Up until now, it has been a minefield when it comes to choosing an electrician to carry out electrical work and with 20,000 unregistered electricians carrying out electrical work every day – often without the home owners knowledge, something had to change.

The register, known as Registered Competent Person is not branded or sponsored in any way. It is also the only full register of electricians that is Government approved and non-biased. Electricians cannot pay to go on there. The only way electricians can appear on Registered Competent Person is by being appropriately qualified and registered with a approved scheme provider such as the NICEIC, NAPIT etc.

How to avoid an unregistered electrician

Unregistered electricians carry out electrical work in homes and are not qualified and/or registered to do so. Sometimes these people get the work because their prices are so cheap and other times their customer does not realise they are not qualified and registered because they didn't check.

As a registered electrician in Nottingham, I carry out work for increasing numbers of home owners who have had sub standard electrical work carried out in their homes. It is never nice to have to charge someone twice for the same job, however I always recommend that qualifications and registration are checked before work commences.

Luckily this job is now much easier thanks to Registered Competent Person. It is really easy to find an electrician in your local area. Simply visit http://www.electricalcompetentperson.co.uk/ and enter either your postcode or your electricians company name and the search results will bring up the relevant results.

Why was Registered Competent Person was set up

Unlike other trades, there was no single place where customers could search for an electrician to carry out domestic work. There were 2 registers run by individual registering bodies, however this proved not to be helpful to the public. Following lengthy Governmental consultations, Registered Competent Person was launched on the 2nd July 2014 which lists every electrician in England and Wales who is fully qualified and registered with a recognised scheme provider.

Registered Competent Person will promote electrical safety in the home and promote the importance of using only qualified and registered electricians to carry out work in your home. Remember electricity kills 1 person every week and injures 1000's more. Householders have been seriously injured by the work of unregistered electricians.
